Germany's Zuse-Gemeinschaft addresses industrial innovation gap

Germany faces a significant gap between scientific invention and industrial implementation. While the country generates numerous ideas, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often lack the personnel, funding, and dedicated research departments required to transform these concepts into marketable innovations.

To address this, the Zuse-Gemeinschaft, a network of approximately 80 industry-oriented research institutes, acts as a bridge between research and the Mittelstand. These institutes develop new products, materials, and production processes across various sectors, including wood, informatics, plastics, lasers, paper, and steel. Martin Bastian, President of the Konrad Zuse Industrial Research Association, notes that these institutes step in when companies cannot afford to conduct broad or complex research independently.

One of the larger members of the network is the SKZ in Würzburg, which employs 500 people. The association aims to increase the competitiveness of German SMEs, though Bastian has warned that the political connection between research and industry is currently being weakened.
