Germán Pezzella joins Peñarol and makes debut in Uruguay
Argentine defender Germán Pezzella has officially joined Peñarol in Uruguay following his departure from River Plate. The 35-year-old, a 2022 World Cup winner, signed an 18-month contract with the club as a free agent.
Pezzella made his debut for Peñarol this Saturday during a 4-0 victory against Danubio in the Torneo Clausura. He entered the match in the 61st minute. Following the game, Pezzella expressed his satisfaction with returning to competitive play and noted that he is working to integrate with his new teammates under coach Diego Aguirre.
Pezzella becomes the first World Cup winner to play in Uruguayan football in over half a century. His decorated career includes titles with the Argentine national team, as well as various trophies with River Plate and Real Betis.
