Gernot Trauner announces retirement from professional football

Austrian defender Gernot Trauner has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34. After a sixteen-year career, the player shared the decision via social media, noting that while the conclusion is difficult, it feels like the right time to begin a new chapter.

Trauner is widely recognized for his significant tenure at the Dutch club Feyenoord, where he played 137 matches and served as captain. During his time in Rotterdam, he contributed to a league title in the 2022/23 season and a KNVB Cup victory. His career also included appearances in the Champions League and representing the Austrian national team at the European Championship.

Reflecting on his journey, Trauner noted that his career was marked by both major achievements and challenges, including injuries that influenced his decision to step away. He expressed gratitude to his family, coaches, teammates, and supporters for their lifelong encouragement.
