Gerontissa Makrina, Abbess of Ligovitsio Monastery, passes away
Gerontissa Makrina, the Abbess of the Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Ligovitsio, Xiromero, passed away on the morning of Monday, October 26, 2026, at the age of 89.
Born in Messinia in 1937, she was a former educator and theologian who dedicated her life to the Church. After entering monastic life in 1980, she settled at Ligovitsio in 1983 and was elected Abbess in 1986. She is credited with the significant spiritual and physical reconstruction of the historic monastery.
Her funeral service was led by Metropolitan Damaskinos of Aetolia and Acarnania, with participation from various clergy, monastic sisterhoods, and local officials, including the Mayor of Xiromero, Ioannis Triantafyllakis. The service was attended by a large number of faithful expressing gratitude for her years of spiritual guidance and service to the local community.
