Gers child murder triggers probe of justice and police failures

An inspection report presented to the Prime Minister cited delayed transmission between the Toulouse and Auch prosecutors, a failure to flag the case as urgent and a 13‑day loss of time, allowing suspect Jérôme Barella to remain free until his eventual detention.

The report, authored by the heads of the national gendarmerie and justice inspections, described “points of improvement” and a “cumulative loss of time” in the investigation. Public outrage has erupted across France, with weekly demonstrations outside courthouses demanding accountability.
