Gerti Tetzner: Banned GDR novel released after 50 years

Author Gerti Tetzner is experiencing a literary resurgence with the publication of her novel ‘Gegen Wind’. Originally titled ‘Die Oase’, the book was prevented from being published by the East German State Security (Stasi) due to its content.

Set in an East German city during the early 1980s, the novel centers on a vibrant kindergarten that stands in contrast to the surrounding grey, prefabricated apartment blocks. The story follows Kristina, a young educator who strives to foster creativity and individuality in children, challenging the standardized educational models enforced by the GDR authorities.

This release follows the successful reissue of Tetzner’s 1974 novel ‘Karen W.’, which was a major success in the GDR. The new publication comes ahead of the author’s 90th birthday in November.
