Geseke train derailment investigation cites overloading as cause

An investigation by the Federal Bureau of Railway Accident Investigation has identified overloading as the likely cause of a fatal train derailment near Geseke in September 2023. The 30-year-old locomotive driver died in the accident when a cement train derailed at a junction leading to the main track.

The report suggests the driver significantly overloaded the train, attempting to complete the transport in two trips rather than the required seven. This decision was reportedly made to save time so the driver could reach a second job with a different employer immediately following his shift. Neither employer was aware of the driver's secondary employment.

In addition to the overloading, the investigation noted several safety failures. The driver did not properly prepare the train for the journey, creating a risk that the locomotive would be uncontrollable, and failed to sufficiently secure the train against unintentional rolling.
