Gesundheit Nord plans restructuring to avoid insolvency
The Bremen-based hospital group Gesundheit Nord (Geno) has announced a radical restructuring plan to prevent imminent insolvency. The management intends to cut 500 full-time positions and significantly downsize Klinikum Bremen-Ost, which is expected to transition into a specialized site for psychiatry and forensics. As part of this shift, the emergency room and intensive care unit at Klinikum Bremen-Ost are slated for closure, with services such as surgery, neurology, and dermatology being relocated to other Geno sites.
The group is facing severe financial distress, with a projected deficit of 20 million euros for the current year. Furthermore, annual losses are expected to reach 40 million euros starting in 2027 due to federal austerity measures affecting statutory health insurance.
In response to the crisis, the governing factions in Bremen—the SPD, Greens, and Left Party—aim to involve the political opposition in the restructuring process to ensure broad support. Meanwhile, approximately 100 people gathered to demonstrate against the proposed cuts at Klinikum Bremen-Ost.
