Gevgelija Old Bazaar reopens after 41 million denar reconstruction
The Old Bazaar in Gevgelija has been officially reopened following a multi-phase reconstruction project valued at approximately 40.7 to 41 million denars. The project, funded by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, aimed to revitalize the historic 19th-century site, which has been a registered cultural monument since 2004.
The renovation included comprehensive upgrades to both visible and hidden infrastructure. Key improvements involved the restoration of 27 building facades, new granite paving, urban equipment, and lighting, as well as the complete reconstruction of underground systems, including water, sewage, and electrical infrastructure. The project sought to balance modern functionality with the preservation of the area's characteristic architectural spirit.
Government officials, including Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski, and Minister of Culture and Tourism Sedat Sulejmani, attended the opening ceremony. Officials emphasized that the project transforms the bazaar into a modern cultural and tourist hub, intended to support local community development and tourism while preserving cultural heritage for future generations.
