GFSEC targets Chinese steel overcapacity and market distortions

The Global Forum on Excess Capacity in the Steel Sector (GFSEC) has launched an initiative to combat market distortions caused by non-market practices. The organization specifically highlighted China, noting that typical Chinese steel companies receive subsidies—including grants, tax concessions, and below-market loans—that are approximately 15 times larger relative to their assets than companies in other regions. GFSEC reports that China's steel sector subsidies have nearly doubled since 2019.

U.S. Ambassador Jamieson Greer stated that the American steel industry is undergoing a renaissance supported by tariffs and favorable fiscal policies. He expressed intent to work with GFSEC members to implement the Milwaukee Framework to restore fair global competition.

At the Congresso Aço Brasil 2026, industry experts discussed the impact of Chinese oversupply. Speakers noted that as the U.S. and Europe implement trade defenses, much of China's excess production is being absorbed by the Brazilian market. Former Mexican Ambassador Jorge Guajardo warned that China's aggressive export expansion in sectors like steel and petrochemicals poses a risk of global deindustrialization.
