Ghana 24-hour economy policy originated from national development plan
Dr. Nii Moi Thompson, Chairman of the National Development Planning Committee (NDPC), stated that Ghana’s 24-hour economy policy originated from the nation’s 48-year development plan rather than being a creation of President John Mahama’s second-term administration. The policy was later adopted by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government after being identified within the long-term national plan.
Dr. Thompson noted that while the 48-year development plan was intended for full legislative approval, the process was never completed. However, elements of the plan have already influenced other initiatives, such as the establishment of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the development of the Ghana Agency for Development Cooperation.
Regarding implementation, Dr. Thompson indicated that progress has been made in securing investments across various sectors. He emphasized that while large businesses are being addressed, the government should place greater focus on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) over the next two years.
