Ghana advances digital economy through SME enrollment and mobile payments

Ghana is advancing its digital economy through government initiatives and private sector expansion. The government has enrolled more than 350 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) onto a digital commerce platform. Developed via the Ghana-India-Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence with funding from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the platform is operated through the Ghana Enterprise Authority.

To support this transition, 110 trained digital champions are assisting businesses across the country. Additionally, Ghana Post is undergoing a transformation from a traditional postal service into a modern logistics and e-commerce enabler, focusing on courier services, parcels, and last-mile logistics.

In the private sector, MTN Ghana is targeting the informal economy—including market traders and drivers—to promote a cash-lite economy. The company aims to expand financial inclusion by offering digital payment solutions and micro-pension and insurance services through its Mobile Money (MoMo) platform, seeking to integrate informal workers into the formal financial system over the next decade.
