Ghana Airports Company cracks down on airport extortion

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) announced a series of actions to stop extortion at Ghana’s airports. In a press release on 5 August, GACL said it would launch a “mystery‑shopping” programme in which anonymous visitors report any demands for money, and it opened a dedicated hotline (phone, WhatsApp, SMS) for passengers to report incidents involving staff from agencies such as immigration, customs, police and private contractors. The company warned that anyone caught extorting would face disciplinary action and be barred from working at any airport.

During a parliamentary committee visit, GACL Managing Director Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare confirmed that two car‑park attendants at Accra International Airport had been dismissed after repeated passenger complaints. She urged the public to continue reporting misconduct so that swift action can be taken.
