Ghana Airports Company Limited launches crackdown on airport extortion
Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has launched an initiative to combat extortion and illegal tip-solicitation at Kotoka International Airport. The crackdown includes the deployment of undercover mystery shoppers to monitor staff and service providers. Any personnel caught demanding unofficial payments will be publicly named and shamed.
The scope of the investigation extends beyond GACL employees to include immigration officers, customs officials, porters, and other agencies operating within the airport. President John Dramani Mahama has supported the measure, stating that such behavior damages Ghana’s international reputation and the aviation sector.
To facilitate reporting, GACL has established a dedicated hotline accessible via call, WhatsApp, or SMS at 0542 175 636. Passengers are encouraged to provide specific details, such as the time, location, and identity of the individual involved. Additionally, GACL has released official parking rates to help travelers identify unauthorized charges, with rates ranging from GH¢20 for one hour to GH¢150 for stays exceeding 24 hours.
