Ghana and Burkina Faso sign defense pact to secure trade routes
Ghana and Burkina Faso have signed a new defense agreement aimed at securing cross-border trade routes and enhancing regional economic stability. The partnership focuses on protecting essential transport corridors, goods, and supply chains from the insecurity currently affecting the Sahel region.
The agreement includes provisions for security support and escort operations along major axes connecting the two nations. By increasing coordination between their respective defense forces, both governments intend to protect critical infrastructure and facilitate the movement of traders and workers.
The signing ceremony involved Ghanaian Deputy Minister of Defense Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson and Burkinabè Minister of State for War and Patriotic Defense, Major General Célestin Simporé. This military cooperation seeks to strengthen bilateral ties and address the armed threats that disrupt the circulation of people and goods across their shared 500-kilometer border.
