Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire commission 37 new boundary pillars
Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire have completed the first phase of a joint land boundary reaffirmation exercise, resulting in the commissioning of 37 new International Boundary Pillars (IBPs). The project covered a total distance of 150 kilometres and was supervised by the Ghana Boundary Commission (GhBC).
The newly constructed pillars include one Terminus Pillar, 12 Main Pillars, 20 Intermediate Pillars, and four Border Crossing Pillars. The Terminus Pillar is particularly significant as it marks the transition point where the land boundary ends and the international maritime boundary begins. Ceremonies for the commissioning were held at New Town in Ghana’s Jomoro Municipality and Diby in Côte d’Ivoire.
The project was funded by the German development agency GIZ and the African Union Border Programme (AUBP), with the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces serving as the contractor. Major General Anthony Ntem, Commissioner General of the Ghana Boundary Commission, stated that clearly defined and mutually respected boundaries are intended to facilitate the free movement of people, goods, and services to support regional integration.
