Ghana and Japan expand cooperation in space science and technology
Ghana and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in space science, technology, and innovation. The agreement was highlighted during a visit to Accra by Dr. Koichi Wakata, a Japanese astronaut and the Chief Technology Officer for Asia Pacific at Axiom Space, between September 15 and 19, 2026.
Ghanaian Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa emphasized that space exploration is a global endeavor requiring international collaboration. He noted that 2027 will mark the 70th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between the two nations. The visit also includes engagements with Ghanaian students to encourage interest in science and technology.
Ambassador Khadija Iddrisu, Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noted the critical role of satellite technologies in supporting Ghana’s national development, specifically in sectors such as agriculture, communications, environmental monitoring, disaster management, and national security. The partnership aims to build Ghana’s capacity to harness these advanced technologies through knowledge exchange.
