Ghana and Kyrgyzstan hold talks on AU and UN Security Council cooperation

President John Dramani Mahama and Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubayev held high-level bilateral talks in Accra to strengthen trade, regional cooperation, and multilateral relations. A central focus of the discussions was the strategic alignment between the African Union (AU) and the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

The timing of the dialogue is significant as Mahama is set to assume the AU Chairmanship in January 2027, the same month Kyrgyzstan begins its two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UNSC. The leaders discussed ways to enhance coordination to resolve conflicts across Africa, specifically through the implementation of UN Resolution 2719, which aims to provide more stable funding for AU-led peace support operations.

Additional topics included the review of a newly signed Visa Waiver Agreement, investments in the mining sector, and trade integration. Furthermore, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov has accepted an invitation to attend Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary celebrations next year.
