Ghana and Malawi implement school feeding initiatives to improve child nutrition
Governments and non-profit organizations in Ghana and Malawi are implementing initiatives to combat child malnutrition and improve educational outcomes through school feeding programmes.
In Ghana, the government has reaffirmed its commitment to the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP). The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, toured nutrition training centres in the Greater Accra Region to oversee reforms. Supported by the World Bank and the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, the programme is providing caterers and cooks with training in food safety, hygiene, and healthy meal preparation to ensure pupils receive balanced diets.
In Malawi, Madalitso Baloyi, Member of Parliament for Mzimba Kafukule and Minister of Health and Sanitation, has launched a school feeding initiative in partnership with the non-profit Feed the Children. The scheme targets 46 community-based centres to address food insecurity that has hindered academic performance. The initiative involves distributing nutrient-rich flour blends made from soybean and roasted maize to ensure children receive meals before attending classes.
