Ghana and Nigeria advance higher education and security training reforms
In Ghana, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has inaugurated a 19-member Governing Council for the National Defence University (NDU). The council aims to unify tertiary-level defence and security education under a single academic framework, consolidating previously fragmented military and security training bodies. The initiative is designed to address evolving cyber, geopolitical, and security challenges by building capacity among military personnel, security services, and civilians.
In Nigeria, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has commenced a committee meeting to develop national guidelines for a micro-credentials framework. Executive Secretary Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu stated that these micro-credentials are intended to serve as flexible learning pathways to enhance skills development and bridge the gap between higher education and the workforce, rather than replacing traditional degree programs. The project is being organized in collaboration with the Commonwealth of Learning.
