Ghana and South Korea launch heritage protection project

Ghana and South Korea have launched the Korea-Ghana Heritage Project, a collaborative initiative designed to protect the nation’s cultural and natural heritage from the impacts of climate change.

Scheduled to run from 2026 to 2030, the project aims to build Ghana’s institutional and technical capacity to address environmental threats such as flooding, erosion, and shifting weather patterns. The initiative, themed ‘Empowering Climate Action, Strengthening Ghana’s Integrated Capacity for Climate Change Response in Heritage Conservation,’ seeks to integrate climate considerations directly into heritage conservation strategies.

A delegation led by Dr. Hyunik Hong, Secretary-General of the Korean National Commission for UNESCO, presented the project to Ghana’s Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, and officials from the Ghana Commission for UNESCO in Accra. The partnership builds upon existing cooperation between the two nations in the sectors of education, culture, and sustainable development.
