Ghana and Zambia implement measures to strengthen public sector audit and accountability

Governmental bodies in Ghana and Zambia are implementing measures to strengthen internal audit functions and enhance public accountability.

In Ghana, the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture has inaugurated a five-member internal audit committee. Mandated under the Public Financial Management Act, 2016, the committee is tasked with overseeing risk management, financial reporting, and compliance. The committee, chaired by Joyce Enyonam Agbanavor, aims to identify systemic weaknesses and support effective governance within the ministry.

In Zambia, the government has launched a standardized training and certification program for approximately 350 internal auditors. Conducted at the National Institute of Public Administration, the initiative seeks to improve service delivery and ensure the disciplined use of public resources. Officials noted that strengthening internal controls is essential for translating government policies and budget allocations into measurable results for citizens.
