Ghana appoints new vice-chancellors at UMaT and KNUST

Professor Bernard Kumi‑Boateng was invested on 1 August 2026 as the fourth Vice‑Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), becoming the institution’s first alumnus to hold the post. His appointment follows a rigorous selection by a university search committee and marks a personal journey from working as a public toilet attendant in Bantama to earning a PhD in Geomatic Engineering and serving in several senior academic roles.

At the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Professor Christian Agyare was inaugurated as the 13th Vice‑Chancellor. During the ceremony, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, urged the new leader to govern through dialogue, fairness and openness rather than command, emphasizing the importance of managing internal differences through established university structures.

Both appointments signal a new leadership era for two of Ghana’s leading science and engineering universities, with expectations of fostering innovation, partnership and inclusive governance.
