Ghana Armwrestling Federation marks 10 years of growth

The Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) is celebrating its tenth anniversary, marking its evolution from an informal pastime played on wooden tables to a recognized national sporting body. GAF achieved official status as Ghana’s 40th national sporting federation in 2016, which enabled affiliations with the Africa Armwrestling Federation (AFA) and the World Armwrestling Federation (WAF).

The federation’s growth has been characterized by three strategic phases: establishing a structured sporting product, developing a recognized competitive brand, and pursuing commercial viability. To build a talent pipeline, GAF implemented grassroots outreach programs in schools and tertiary institutions, including initiatives such as ‘Kids Armwrestling’ and ‘Campus Rumble’.

Beyond athlete development, the federation has focused on professionalizing the sport by establishing a Referees Commission, a Coaches Chamber, and an Athletes Brigade. This infrastructure has allowed Ghanaian athletes, competing under the name ‘Golden Arms’, to participate in international competitions, including the World Armwrestling Championship in India.
