Ghana Attorney-General: Kotoka International Airport name remains legal

The Attorney-General has informed the Supreme Court that Kotoka International Airport remains the facility's correct legal name. This statement comes despite government officials referring to the site as Accra International Airport in recent months.

The legal dispute follows a lawsuit filed by Austin Kwabena Brako-Powers, who seeks a declaration that renaming the airport without amending the General Kotoka Trust Decree, 1969 (NLCD 339) is unconstitutional. The Attorney-General argued in an affidavit that the 1969 decree remains fully intact and operative, and that the renaming process cannot be completed until Parliament amends the existing law.

According to the government, the Accra International Airport Bill, 2026, has received Cabinet approval and been signed by the Minister for Transport. The Bill is reportedly ready to be laid before Parliament. The Attorney-General noted that practical steps for the renaming, such as updating signage, digital platforms, and aviation publications, are still outstanding, indicating the change has not yet taken legal effect.
