Ghana banking sector shows strength amid improving economic conditions

Ghana’s banking sector is showing signs of renewed strength as macroeconomic conditions improve and sovereign risk perceptions decline. The Bank of Ghana reported that systemic vulnerabilities remained subdued at the end of June 2026, providing financial institutions with more room to expand credit and strengthen balance sheets.

Fitch Ratings noted that banks are benefiting from Ghana’s improving creditworthiness following sovereign debt restructuring. The sector’s total capital adequacy ratio reached 20.4% by the end of June 2026, more than double the 10% regulatory minimum. Additionally, the impaired loans ratio fell to 16.1% in the first half of 2026, down from 23.1% in the same period the previous year.

While profitability remains strong, Fitch cautioned that sharply lower interest rates may continue to weigh on margins throughout 2026. Fitch also upgraded the Long-Term Issuer Default Ratings for Guaranty Trust Bank (Ghana) Ltd and United Bank for Africa Ghana Ltd to ‘B’/Positive.
