Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah denies financial misconduct allegations

Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah is at the center of a political and legal controversy following an attempted arrest by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) at the Accra High Court on September 23, 2026. The incident, which involved a confrontation between EOCO officers and the MP while he was acting as legal counsel, has sparked national debate regarding parliamentary immunity and the limits of law enforcement powers.

EOCO stated the attempt was linked to an investigation into a client of the MP’s law firm, SBA and Partners, noting that the MP had previously failed to honor two invitations to assist with the probe. In response, Baffour Awuah has denied several allegations, including claims that he received GHS 2.2 million in disputed legal fees, that he transferred funds to a former managing director of SIC Life Savings and Loans, and that he was involved in a GHS 24 million judicial property sale.

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has condemned the attempted arrest, warning that such actions could intimidate legal professionals and undermine the administration of justice. The GBA also raised concerns regarding the alleged assault of another lawyer during the encounter. Legal experts and political figures have since debated whether EOCO should have obtained a court warrant and coordinated through the Speaker of Parliament to ensure due process.
