Ghana Bar Association criticized over constitutional stance

Kasise Ricky Peprah has criticized the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) for its current stance on constitutionalism, labeling it an apparent about-face. Peprah argues that the GBA is now using the 1992 Constitution as a political tool despite having historically distanced itself from the process that created it.

According to the historical record, the GBA declined to participate in the Consultative Assembly established under PNDC Law 253, which drafted the 1992 Constitution. Peprah notes that the Association previously treated the constitutional process with contempt and denigration. He asserts that while the GBA was entitled to boycott the process, its current grandstanding regarding the sanctity of the document deserves historical interrogation, emphasizing that the Constitution belongs to the Ghanaian people rather than any specific institution.
