West African football teams prepare for WAFU and Olympic qualifiers

West African youth and women's football teams are entering critical preparation and competitive phases. Ghana’s U17 national team, the Black Starlets, have arrived in Morocco to play two friendly matches against the Moroccan U17 side. These matches serve as final preparations for the WAFU Zone B U17 Championship, which acts as a qualifier for the 2027 U17 Africa Cup of Nations.

In the WAFU-B U17 Girls Cup, Nigeria’s Flamingos maintained a perfect record with a 2-0 victory over hosts Côte d’Ivoire. Goals from Oluwakemi Adegbuyi and Pattra Oparanmegwa secured the win, placing Nigeria at the top of the standings with 12 points from four matches. Ghana’s Black Maidens also continue their campaign in the tournament, following a recent 4-0 win over Togo.

Additionally, Nigeria’s Super Falcons are set to resume training in Ikenne on October 4. The team is preparing for a two-legged Olympic qualifying tie against Comoros, scheduled for October 9 and 13. The squad will be led by interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen as they seek to return to the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament.
