Ghana boxing committee seeks arrest of Ayitey Powers
The Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) has requested that the Ghana Police Service investigate, arrest, and prosecute boxer Michael Nii Ayitey Okai, known as Ayitey Powers. The request follows allegations that the boxer made death threats against Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), via social media.
In a statement signed by chairman Samir Captan, the GBIMC condemned the alleged actions as criminal and cowardly. The committee further alleged that Ayitey Powers has a history of online verbal abuse, including insults directed at Captan and the committee’s vice-chairman, former world boxing champion Professor Azumah Nelson.
In addition to seeking police intervention, the GBIMC has initiated immediate disciplinary proceedings against the boxer. The committee stated that these actions are part of its mandate to regulate and restructure boxing in Ghana, emphasizing that the sport should not be held hostage by intimidation or impunity.
