Ghana health experts warn of high breast cancer mortality due to late diagnosis
Health specialists in Ghana are raising alarms over the country's high breast cancer death rate, noting that while the incidence of the disease is lower than in many Western nations, the mortality rate remains disproportionately high. Experts from Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and other medical professionals report that nearly 2,700 women die annually from the disease, with approximately 5,000 new cases diagnosed each year.
Medical experts attribute this high death toll to late-stage presentation. It is estimated that nearly 70 per cent of patients in Ghana are diagnosed at an advanced stage, making treatment significantly more difficult. Specialists are urging the public to practice breast awareness and seek immediate medical attention upon noticing unusual changes, such as lumps or skin dimpling.
In response to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, various initiatives have been launched across Ghana. Adamus Resources Limited and the Telecel Ghana Foundation have conducted community outreach and screening programs in the Western and Volta regions to promote early detection. Additionally, doctors have highlighted that men are also at risk and often face higher fatality rates due to delayed reporting.
