Ghana Broadcasting Corporation Director-General calls for net neutrality

Prof Amin Alhassan, Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), has urged the Ghanaian government to implement net neutrality policies to protect media organisations. Speaking at the launch of the Model Safety of Journalists Policy in Accra, Alhassan warned that telecommunications operators could threaten media sustainability by giving preferential treatment to their own digital content platforms.

Alhassan noted that network operators might use algorithms to make third-party media applications less accessible while ensuring their own platforms function seamlessly. He cited MTN’s upcoming launch of a content application as a specific example of this shifting landscape. He suggested Ghana look to models in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada to prevent discriminatory digital access.

In a separate event in Wa, former GBC Director-General Major (rtd) Albert Don-Chebe emphasized the role of media as a foundation for democracy. While expressing concern regarding Ghana’s current media freedom index ranking, he noted that media freedom in the country is gradually improving.
