Ghana cedi slides nearly 10% against the dollar in July 2026

The Ghanaian cedi weakened sharply in July 2026, with the interbank rate falling to about GH¢12.20 per US dollar, reflecting an approximate 9.5% depreciation against the greenback over the seven months of the year. Retail rates showed a modest gain of roughly 0.5% since the start of 2026, while forex bureaus quoted a selling rate of GH¢12.30.

Bank of Ghana data indicate the cedi traded at GH¢11.55 to the dollar in July 2026, compared with GH¢10.50 at the same time in 2025. The currency also lost ground against the British pound and the euro, slipping 7.1% and 9.5% respectively in the interbank market during the month. Analysts attribute the interbank slide to sustained pressure on demand for foreign exchange exceeding the supply provided by the central bank's policy interventions.
