Ghana cedi weakens against US dollar as forex rates rise
The Ghanaian cedi experienced depreciation against the US dollar on August 19, 2026. At forex bureaus, the currency reached a selling rate of GHS 12.25, while the Bank of Ghana interbank market recorded a selling rate of GHS 11.05.
This decline in value follows a period of fluctuation. In the interbank market, the cedi was quoted at GHS 11.04 for buying and GHS 11.05 for selling. At forex bureaus, the buying rate was GHS 11.85 and the selling rate was GHS 12.25.
Economic analysis regarding the cedi emphasizes that the sustainability of the currency's value depends on its drivers. While Bank of Ghana interventions can strengthen the cedi by increasing foreign currency supply to moderate inflation and lower import costs, such artificial support may not reflect underlying economic fundamentals and could impact the competitiveness of domestic producers.
