Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications warns of rising mobile money fraud

The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications has issued a warning to mobile money (MoMo) users regarding increasingly sophisticated fraud tactics. During a public education drive titled ‘Mankessim Market Storm’ in the Central Region, industry representatives highlighted that technological safeguards alone are insufficient to prevent theft.

Criminals are reportedly utilizing social engineering, SIM-swap schemes, phishing messages, and fraudulent customer-service calls to steal Personal Identification Numbers (PINs). In some instances, fraudsters impersonate telecom agents, claiming a customer’s account or line is facing deactivation to pressure victims into revealing sensitive credentials.

Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah, CEO of the Chamber, emphasized that preventing fraud requires a partnership between service providers, law enforcement, and the public. She urged users to treat their MoMo PINs with the same level of care as bank PINs and to report any suspicious activity immediately to their service providers or the police.
