Ghana Chief Justice urges employers to tackle mental health stigma

Ghanaian Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has called on employers to foster inclusive and supportive work environments to combat the stigma surrounding mental health. Speaking at a World Mental Health Day celebration in Accra, the Chief Justice emphasized that mental well-being is an essential component of a healthy and effective workplace rather than a peripheral concern.

In a speech delivered by Supreme Court Judge Sophia Rosetta Bernasko-Essah, Baffoe-Bonnie noted that fear of judgment or exclusion often prevents individuals from discussing mental health challenges. He urged institutions to implement policies that prioritize mental well-being and to create a culture where seeking help is not viewed as a weakness.

The Chief Justice also highlighted the necessity of mental health support for judicial officers and staff, stating that their well-being is fundamental to the integrity and proper functioning of the justice system. He recommended the use of screening and assessments to identify concerns at an early stage.
