Ghana commission demands envoy Ekwow Spio‑Garbrah prove doctorate
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) sent a letter on 27 July 2026 to Ekwow Spio‑Garbrah, Ghana’s Presidential Envoy for Reparations, ordering him to provide documentation confirming the legitimacy of his “Dr.” title. The commission asked for the name of the awarding institution, whether the doctorate was earned or honorary, the date of conferment and the process by which it was obtained.
If Spio‑Garbrah cannot supply the requested evidence, GTEC requires him to cease using the title immediately and to remove it from all public and official materials, including correspondence, websites, letterheads and profiles. The directive is part of a broader 2024‑2026 campaign by GTEC to curb the use of unearned academic titles by public figures in Ghana.
