Ghana Consumer Protection Agency clears registered sanitary towels
Ghana's Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) has cleared all registered sanitary towel brands on the market following reports of users experiencing itching, boils, and general discomfort. After receiving complaints, the agency retested all registered products and confirmed they meet the standards set by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA).
In a statement signed by Head of Complaints Benjamin Akoto, the CPA suggested that the reported health issues may stem from improper handling and usage rather than manufacturing defects. The agency identified three primary contributing factors: poor hand hygiene during application, failure to change pads at recommended intervals (every two to four hours), and excessive heat caused by wearing multiple layers of clothing, such as two pairs of underwear.
To address gaps in public awareness, the CPA plans to launch a nationwide educational campaign regarding the safe and hygienic use of feminine hygiene products.
