Ghana Deputy Education Minister promotes TVET and private sector partnerships
At the China–Africa Sub-Forum in Tianjin, Ghana’s Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, advocated for stronger collaboration between academic institutions and the private sector to enhance Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). He emphasized that vocational training is essential for youth empowerment, industrial expansion, and economic transformation, noting that institutions cannot develop market-ready skills without active industry participation.
Dr. Apaak highlighted Ghana’s use of Competency-Based Training (CBT), which includes 445 packages across 89 programmes supported by 16 Sector Skills Bodies. He also noted the success of Workplace Experience Learning (WEL), with 81.8 per cent of TVET institutions securing placements for learners.
In a separate announcement in Accra, Dr. Apaak welcomed a scholarship initiative by Colgate-Palmolive Ghana and Melcom. The partnership will award 16 scholarships worth GH¢15,000 each, totaling GH¢240,000, to assist students with school fees and educational materials. This initiative is intended to complement the government’s GH¢42.16 billion allocation to the education sector for 2025.
