Ghana Detains Belgian Woman Amid Interpol Red Notice and Deportation Dispute

Ghanaian authorities arrested Belgian citizen Aminata Bangoura after she arrived in Accra from Paris, acting on an Interpol Red Notice issued by Guinea. Her lawyers say the notice is politically motivated; Bangoura was formerly the partner of Guinean Minister of State and Presidential Secretary‑General Brigadier‑General Amara Camara and fears persecution if returned to Conakry. She has applied for political asylum in Ghana and remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.

Her lawyer, activist Oliver Barker‑Vormawor, reported that Ghana officials attempted to deport her to the airport without a court order. Bangoura locked herself in a toilet at the airport demanding her lawyer’s presence. Barker‑Vormawor has sought a meeting with Interpol Ghana officials, alleging violations of due‑process and questioning Ghana’s adherence to domestic and international human‑rights obligations.
