Ghana develops five-year plan for reparations agenda
Ghana has drafted a five-year action plan to advance its reparations agenda through diplomatic engagement, reparative financing, and reforms to the global financial architecture. The proposed program aims to transition the movement from advocacy to practical implementation.
Dr. Ekow Spio-Garbrah, Ghana’s Special Envoy for Reparations, stated that the draft plan has been submitted to the Presidency for consideration. Once approved, the framework will guide the work of the Reparations Officer, manage reparations resources, and shape Ghana’s engagements with the African Union, the United Nations, the IMF, the World Bank, and bilateral partners in Europe and the Americas.
The initiative aligns with the African Union’s designated ‘Decade of Reparations’ from 2026 to 2035. This period is intended to maintain momentum for reparative justice through public education, legal advocacy, and the creation of financial instruments. The plan also seeks to build support among the 55 AU member states, diaspora communities, and Caribbean nations pursuing similar claims.
