Ghana domestic airfares rise amid broader economic pricing concerns

Rising domestic airfares in Ghana have become a significant public concern, with many consumers finding domestic flights increasingly unaffordable for ordinary workers and families. The high cost of travel is linked to a broader economic phenomenon described as “the Ghanaian pricing culture,” where various business inputs—including office rent, car rentals, and imported equipment—are expensive relative to local income levels.

Airlines face specific challenges, including aviation-related costs that are often priced in US dollars. The domestic market structure has also shifted; while the market featured four players in 2012, it has since consolidated. Currently, Africa World Airlines and PassionAir serve as the two primary scheduled domestic operators in the country.
