Ghana Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu Calls for Zero‑Tolerance Discipline in Schools

At a national conference in Sunyani, Ghana’s Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu announced a zero‑tolerance policy for bullying, weapons, substance abuse and other criminal conduct in senior‑high schools, urging schools to become safe learning spaces. He said the government, President John Dramani Mahama and the Ministry fully back headteachers to enforce discipline.

The two‑day meeting gathered educators, parents, traditional and religious leaders and development partners to discuss causes such as inadequate parental involvement, technology influence and weakened societal support. Director‑General of the Ghana Education Service Ernest Kofi Davis highlighted implementation challenges and called for a coordinated national framework, stronger collaboration and values‑based education to curb indiscipline.
