Ghana Education Minister holds emergency talks to avert teacher strike

Ghana's Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, has convened emergency talks with teacher unions, including the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), to avert a potential nationwide strike. The meeting, which included officials from the Controller and Accountant General's Department, appears to address grievances regarding salaries or payments.

The threat of industrial action coincides with a delay in the release of Senior High School (SHS) placement results. The Ministry of Education has postponed the 2026/2027 Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) results to September 4, 2026. The delay was intended to allow more time for the submission and uploading of student data to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and CSSPS platforms, as approximately 20,000 qualified students had yet to have their school choices uploaded.

A strike during this period would impact the processing and reception of over 500,000 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduates into their new institutions.
