Ghana Education Minister promotes No-Fees-Stress Initiative

Ghanaian Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has addressed key educational policies and defended the government's performance regarding student funding and school programs.

Iddrisu opened a stakeholder dialogue on the implementation of the No-Fees-Stress Initiative. This flagship intervention, introduced under President John Dramani Mahama’s Resetting Ghana Agenda, aims to progressively remove financial barriers to tertiary education. The initiative seeks to ensure that qualified students are not excluded from higher education due to a lack of funds. The dialogue involves government officials, tertiary institutions, students, parents, and development partners to assess progress and address challenges.

Additionally, the Minister rejected claims made by New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia regarding difficulties facing the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme. Iddrisu asserted that the programme has seen notable improvements under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government and continues to receive necessary resources. He suggested that Bawumia may have been misinformed regarding the current state of the policy, particularly concerning student feeding arrangements and other support services.
