Ghana Education Service completes promotion exams for 60,000 teachers
More than 60,000 teachers nationwide have completed a three-day promotion exercise organized by the Ghana Education Service (GES). The exercise, which concluded on Wednesday, November 5, was reported by monitoring officers to be generally smooth and free of major incidents.
The promotion process marks a significant shift in policy as the GES implements a framework that separates professional ranks from administrative positions. This new arrangement aims to remove career barriers by ensuring teachers can advance based on professional competence, years of experience, and continued service rather than the availability of administrative vacancies. Under this policy, the number of teachers reaching the rank of Director II is projected to increase by 1,500 per cent, while those reaching Director I are expected to rise by 340 per cent.
In conjunction with the exams, the GES issued a caution to teachers against paying money to individuals promising automatic promotion. The Service emphasized that the process is strictly merit-based and transparent, urging staff to report any fraudulent solicitation to the police.
