Ghana Education Service investigates teachers for alleged student assault

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has launched an investigation and announced disciplinary measures against two teachers at Twene Amanfo Senior High Technical School in Techiman. The action follows a viral video allegedly showing teachers Jerry Jones Owusu Bekoe and Adusa Ameyaw assaulting a final-year student, Seedorf Abeka Ampah.

Preliminary findings suggest the teachers reacted after discovering students were allegedly bullying peers and extorting money using belt buckles. Despite this, GES Deputy Director-General Dr. Issahaque Munwaru stated that the teachers' actions constituted professional misconduct, as the GES Code of Conduct prohibits physical punishment. The teachers are expected to be reprimanded, removed from their roles as Masters on Duty, and surcharged for the student's medical expenses.

The Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights has also weighed in, calling for the reintroduction of safe disciplinary standards in schools to protect children's rights and curb rising indiscipline. The affected student is reportedly receiving medical treatment and responding positively to care.
