Ghana Electoral Commission appointments spark neutrality debate
President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Emelia Affi Agbenyo and Dr. Joseph Kwaku Asamoah as Deputy Chairpersons of Ghana's Electoral Commission (EC). The decision has sparked significant debate regarding the political neutrality and independence of the electoral management body.
Critics, including the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) and legal practitioner Martin Kpebu, have called for Agbenyo's resignation. They argue her previous roles as a spokesperson and legal director for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) compromise the perceived impartiality of the EC. Policy analyst Senyo Hosi expressed disappointment, noting that while Agbenyo may be competent, the appointment risks undermining public confidence in the institution's independence.
Conversely, NDC Communication Team member Hamza Suhuyini defended the appointment, stating it was a “well calculated” and “well reasoned” decision following a rigorous interview process. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa also defended Agbenyo, describing her as a woman of “impeccable integrity” who is capable of performing her duties impartially despite her political history.
