Ghana Electoral Commission official warns against election bribery

Edward Gyamfi, the Deputy Director of the Electoral Commission in Ghana’s Eastern Region, has warned that the increasing use of bribery and financial inducements to influence voters threatens the nation’s democratic stability. Speaking at a public dialogue in Koforidua titled ‘Democracy Is Not For Sale’, Gyamfi emphasized that while money is a significant part of society, using it to sway elections could have severe consequences for the country.

Gyamfi highlighted that the 1992 Constitution, specifically Article 46, guarantees the independence of the Electoral Commission. He urged citizens and political stakeholders to uphold the law and act with honesty to protect democratic gains. He expressed particular concern regarding the influence of incentives on younger generations, noting that the practice of using small gifts to lure votes is even appearing in primary schools.
