Ghana electricity generation remains heavily dependent on thermal power

Ghana’s electricity generation reached 2,317.13 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in July 2026, marking a 3.99% decline from June due to lower seasonal demand, though output increased by 6.20% compared to July 2025.

Thermal power remains the dominant source in the national energy mix, accounting for 74.33% of total generation. The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) expressed concern regarding this heavy reliance on thermal plants and expensive liquid fuels, noting that it exposes the energy sector to foreign exchange pressures and global fuel price volatility.

Other energy sources included hydropower, which contributed 25.01%, and solar, which accounted for 0.66%. Notably, solar output saw a 96.26% year-on-year surge. The national power system maintained a reserve margin of 24.82%, exceeding the 18% adequacy benchmark.

Ghana remained a net exporter of electricity, sending 191.44 GWh to neighboring countries. The largest recipients were Burkina Faso (40.47%), followed by the Togo/Benin corridor (36.64%) and Ivory Coast (22.89%).
